What is this medication? AMIODARONE (a MEE oh da rone) prevents and treats a fast or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). It works by slowing down overactive electric signals in the heart, which stabilizes your heart rhythm. It belongs to a group of medications called antiarrhythmics.

Amiodarone can significantly reduce a person's heart rate and may cause heart block (a slowing of electrical impulses within the heart). On rare occasions (2-5% of patients), amiodarone may worsen the arrhythmia being treated.

There is positive evidence of human fetal risk during pregnancy. Amiodarone 200 mg is not a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

Why is amiodarone a last resort drug? ›

Because amiodarone is such a powerful drug, it's usually only given as a last resort and when other cardiovascular treatment options haven't worked. This is largely due to its potential side effects that can have a significant impact on various major organs in the body, including the lungs, liver, and thyroid.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may increase the side effects of amiodarone by increasing the amount of this medicine in your body. You should not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are using this medicine. Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor.

Despite these side effects, many patients have been treated by us with amiodarone for as long as 5 to 8 years--and for up to 10 years in some cases. Amiodarone appears to be one of the most promising drugs for the possible prevention of ventricular fibrillation and sudden death.
